Frank Stella – Contemporary 3D Artist

Frank Stella has been an icon in the art world since the 1950’s. Overall, he experimented mainly with form in his work, with that his work evolved greatly over time. At the start of his career, he made pieces consisting mostly of minimalistic linework, and as his career went on, his work became more and more freeform and 3D. In the last decade of his career his work expanded to include more sculptural, architectural, and even digital pieces. Stella often pushed the boundaries of what art could be and used pattens, form, gesture, and all sorts of movement to create visually striking pieces. This post explores Stella’s projects, focusing on the significance of his NFT venture and the unveiling of his colossal sculpture at a Montauk art space, as reported in two ARTnews articles by Shanti Escalante-De Mattei.
Frank Stella became a master of form and creating movement with geometric and freeform shapes. This has been shown all throughout his career in his paintings, sculptures, and even digital art. In 2023, a gallery called The Ranch hosted a show presenting 4 of Stella’s sculptures, one of which was never exhibited to the public before. An article from ARTnews stated “That never-before-seen work is The Cabin, Ahab, & Pip (1993) made from stainless and carbon steel that are fashioned into long jagged sheets that seem to explode out of a boxy structure” (Escalante-De Mattei, 2023). This massive sculpture, described by Escalante-De Mattei as a “twisting, towering form,” perfectly summarizes the ability Stella has to create works that dominate and transform their surroundings. The sharp edges and polished surfaces do not seem like they should create such beautiful gesture. The aluminum and steel sculpture is in such large scale that one is invited to marvel at the piece from every angle. This sculpture and others like it are so significant because of the interactivity with the viewers. Stella creates movement from any way you look at his work and often creates pieces big enough for viewers to actually walk through, with each perspective revealing new interactions of light, shadow, and form.
In 2022, Frank Stella made entry into the digital art world by releasing a series of NFTs. Unlike most NFTs, Stella’s offered a more unique aspect, with purchasers gaining the right to 3D-print his designs. As described by Shanti Escalante-De Mattei in her ARTnews article, each NFT functions as a key, granting the buyer the ability to reproduce Stella’s intricate designs through 3D printing technology. These NFTs are a great blend between Stella’s abstract ability and his ability to create multidimensional 3D forms. This form of media changes the dynamic of the relation between a consumer and an artist to make it much more personable and interactive. Buyers aren’t just purchasing a static art piece, but something that they can have full control over how it is produced, from the material used to the size and scale of the print. Katarina Felder, the owner of Arsnl (the platform promoting Stella’s NFTs), states “If you want to spend $100 printing a small one for your desk or $100,000 printing it large for your lawn, you can do that” (Escalante-De Mattei, 2023). Stella’s work takes a purchaser from a collector to a co-creator. This work redefines what ownership of work means and challenges to push those boundaries as well. The designs are Stella designs, but the physical manifestation of each piece depends on the choices made by the buyer. All in all, this shows Frank Stella’s ability to keep up with contemporary art, and only further solidify that his work is timeless.
Frank Stella’s work strikes me as thought-provoking interactive pieces no matter the medium he chooses to explore. His recent work reflects the importance of artistic reinvention. Particularly with his NFT project, Stella creates pieces that are as intellectually engaging as they are visually striking. But in a world dominated by technology, he achieves this just as much with his physical sculptures. With some of his sculptures, specifically those at The Ranch, Stella scales them to great proportions, engaging the viewers like no other. He creates sculptures that transform the space around them and fully encompass the viewers attention. Whether through his groundbreaking NFT project or his monumental sculpture in Montauk, Stella always challenged traditional notions of art, ownership, and space. By bridging the physical and digital realms, Stella redefined the possibilities of contemporary art.
